Overview
This is a great hike away from the crowds. Enjoy a beautiful basin and summiting two 13ers. Adding Garfield adds some easy class 3 scrambling with limited exposure. Taking on Grizzly alone is class 2.
Description
Follow the jeep road past the La Plata trailhead and take a right at each fork. If you make it to the gate at the end of the jeep trail, the full loop is seven miles total, and you'll summit both mountains or six miles if you turn around at the top of Grizzly Peak and make it an out-and-back on the
Grizzly Peak East Ridge.
There is a lot of scree on the way up the trail to Grizzly on the
Garfield/Grizzly Peak Southeast Approach. Mostly a class 2 hike but with some easy class 3 moves if you tack on Garfield.
Please note that there aren't official trail markers, and that the terrain is rocky with sections that require scrambling. Come prepared with a route map (paper and compass can be indispensable here!) and some proper shoes.
