Family Friendly
Mostly flat terrain and nice views of the river
Dogs must be under control at al times and leashed from August to October
Description
The trail begins at the car park next to the Tongariro River Bridge on State Highway 1, where you can park your car. Alternatively you can take a shuttle service from Taupo or
Turangi to the trailhead.
There are alternative starting points along the trail where you can park your car at the
scenic reserves and begin your hike from there. This means shorter routes can be tailored
to suit your particular needs.
The undulating, yet comfortable trail has a variety of scenic locations to stop off at for a picnic lunch, or even a quick dip in the river to cool off during the hot summer months. The National Trout Centre is also on route, where you can get up close to the beautiful fish which inhabit the Tongariro River, or even catch your own trout and take it home for dinner.
The trail can be traveled in all weather conditions and mobile phone coverage is good
along the entire trail. The loop is perfectly suited for families and casual hikers on mostly flat terrain.
