Description

This trail starts a 1/2 mile from the Loristica campground. The trail begins at the end of a dead end logging road. For the first mile or so, the trail winds through pockets of aspen and fir trees, after which the terrain opens to sagebrush and grass with fir trees on the left. Climb to the first saddle and then drop into Big Creek which is surrounded by dense timber. Cross the head of Big Creek, and then start to switchback through rock and sagebrush as the trail suddenly begins to climb quite steeply.

The trail then climbs to a large high elevation plateau, which has a stunning views of the Little Lost and the Big Mountain Range. After about a mile on the plateau, the trail descends steeply into Hell Canyon; here the trail is a bit challenging on the way towards Shadow Lakes, but becomes more moderate after the lakes as it drops into the Long Lost drainage. The Shadow Lakes are a short side trip and scramble down a creek.

A great view after a great climb. Enjoy the downhill, it won't last long.

Early July, just before everything dries out in this high country is the perfect time to hit this trail. The hills are alive!

The trail at dawnbreak. A magnificent time to run it.

The last of the downhill before the "death march" up the mountain. :) No running for the next little bit.
