Description
The Zion Trail connects the Sturtevant Trail near Sturtevant Camp to the
Upper Winter Creek Trail #11W23 near Hoegees Camp. The trail climbs gently from Santa Anita Canyon to pass under a shady canopy of oak, bigcone spruce and bay trees. Eventually, the trail reaches a saddle in about 1 mile. There is a short spur trail leading to the summit with nice views of the canyon and Mt. Wilson.
The trail descends steeply on a south-facing slope of mixed chaparral species. The monkeyflowers can be spectacular in spring. It then drops down to Winter Creek while passing under shady bay trees ending at a junction with the
Lower Winter Creek Trail #11W15. It is possible to return to Chantry Flat by taking either the
Upper Winter Creek Trail #11W23 (right turn) or the
Lower Winter Creek Trail #11W15 (left turn) . It makes a great loop hike when combined with the
Gabrielino Trail (NRT) 11W14 from Chantry Flat.
Flora & Fauna
