Dogs Unknown
Hikers should hike the trail in a counter-clockwise direction.
Description
Bomb Dog is currently the longest section of singletrack in the trail network at Cold Water Mountain. It connects from
Papa Bear in a clockwise direction to the backside of
Baby Bear.
From the intersection with
Papa Bear, Bomb Dog starts with a few miles of climbing and contouring. The grade is steady and rolling but never daunting and gives you a chance to enjoy hardwood forest, a surprisingly beautiful place.
Near the top of the climb, you'll notice some beautiful rock outcroppings that are scattered intermittently throughout the landscape.
As the climb tops out you'll come across a new headstone on the left side of the trail. The memorial honors Floyd the Bomb Dog, a beloved pet of an Anniston local.
From here get ready for a great, mellow descent available anywhere. It's about two miles long. After the big descent you'll keep the smile as you contour, climb and have another short descent. The final climb to finish the loop is nothing major and connects with the backside of
Baby Bear, a nice and mellow finish.
The Bomb Dog Loop - Coldwater Mountain is also a great option, combining
Mama Bear and
Papa Bear with Bomb Dog to make the most of the descents.
