Sunken Mine Road is closed with a gate by the park service for winter.

Description

This trail is always done as part of a loop hike with the Three Lakes Trail and is a popular short trail. Most of the trail is an easy overgrown rail bed, but there is a very rocky section as you pass John Allen Pond. In July and August, this pond has a lot of water lilies blooming.

There is only one trailhead; however, there is only parking for two cars on Sunken Mine Road and this road is also closed in winter. This is another larger parking area out on Dennytown Road, and it is an easy 1/4 mile amble to the trailhead if you park there.

The trail is well-marked with yellow discs. After a short distance, the trail leaves the rail bed to head toward the edge of John Allen Pond. Follow the rocky singletrack, and you'll eventually be back onto the rail bed. The halfway mark is the Charcoal Burner Trail, which is marked with red discs. Continue past this and end on the Three Lakes Trail. Return the way you came or turn right and follow the Three Lakes Trail back to Sunken Mine Road. At the road, turn right back to the trailhead or all the way back to Dennytown Road.
