Overview

The 1000 Steps boasts the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk, a popular hiking trail in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne. The Kokoda Track is a beautiful hiking track which winds its way through forested areas and bushland to the top at One Tree Hill. Whilst there, take some time to read the memorial information to learn a little about the conditions experienced by the Australian soldiers in 1942.

Need to Know

To complete the 1000 Steps, you'll need a good level of fitness and appropriate hiking shoes, as the ground is uneven and rocky. Come to the Steps and put your fitness to the test, although there are a number of shady rest stops along the way for those who need a rest. Make sure to bring your own bottle of water as there are no water fountains on the trail.

Lastly, take caution in the wet as the steps can become quite slippery.

Description

Start out at the car park and stop to take a look at the memorial, which gives information about the hike and why it is special to Australians in remembering those who fought in Kokoda during World War II.

After doing so, head on up the steps to the top of the mountain at One Tree Hill. At the top, take a well-earned rest before heading down.

On the way down, take the Lyrebird Track, which is a wide track unlike the narrow steps from before, and as a result makes it much easier to pass people.

History & Background

The track is a memorial to the Australian soldiers who fought in World War 2 in Kokoda, PNG. It provides a small insight into the conditions experienced by the Australian soldiers during the war.

Massive storage damage. Almost impossible to navigate. Incredibly dangerous side tracks. Legit frightening. But hugely rewarding to reach the top. 2.4mi — 1h 00m
