Family Friendly An array of rock formations to stimulate the imagination. I see pictures with small children among the rocks and reports of how the children loved to explore the formations.

The are no fees for Red Canyon and no wilderness permit is required for this trail.

Description

To reach the trailhead, drive about two miles east on SR 12 from US 89. Before you reach the sign marking the entrance to Red Canyon, there is a road going north marked by a sign for Lossee/Casto. Drive about two miles north to the parking lot for the Lossee Canyon Trail. At the far end of the parking lot, there is a sign for the Arches Trailhead.

Cross the usually dry stream bed and hike a short distance up the trail to a sign that marks the main loop of the Arches Trail. As always in Red Canyon, there are no signs telling you to stay on the trail, and there will be a trail of use to anywhere you might want to go.

Turning right at the trail junction, it's only a short distance up to the largest arch on the trail. A trail of use goes under the arch and then steeply up about 50 yards to where you can get a good picture. Return to the main trail, which then winds steeply up an alcove to some of the best rock formations. Just before the trail starts its main descent, there is a short side trail that takes you to a viewpoint.
