Description
The Donner Pass Trail #926 is on USFS land and can be accessed from the north by Buckhorn Road in Buckhorn Canyon or can also be accessed further up the trail from either Greer Road or Ballard Road. Both Greer and Ballard roads are Forest Service roads and 4WD vehicles may be required. It can also be accessed from the south from the
Miller Fork Trail #997 or
Donner Cutoff Trail #926-1. At the high-point, it intersects with the
Lookout Mountain Trail #934.
This is a high-elevation trail and the singletrack packs on steady climbs through rough terrain. Expect to find rocks littered about, both planted and loose adding to the difficulty. Many areas of the trail are chopped up and/or eroded. In particular, the stretch between Greer Road and Ballard Road is very rough.
Your reward for tackling this rugged trail is access to some of the most beautiful country and views around northern Colorado. If you're looking to get some backcountry hiking in through some pristine Colorado high country, this is a good option. Just remember to be prepared for a challenging workout.
