Need to Know
The Trailhead, known as Butterfly Campground on some maps, is easy to access as it is right off of the paved Mirror Lake Highway, just past Mirror Lake itself. There are benches at the trailhead. Parking can be tight on weekends so allow extra time to find a spot. Typically, this loop is done counter-clockwise.
Description
You may travel the loop in either direction from the parking lot. If you like to take care of the elevation gain first, then start with the eastern half (as shown). The trail is well marked with little or no route finding required.
While Lofty Lake is the highest lake on the hike, Kamas Lake is often the destination as it is a sizable lake tucked behind Mt. Marsell. If traveling counter-clockwise (recommended), the views of Reids Peak and the Reids meadows as you approach the car are beautiful.
If you are looking for a longer day hike, the popular Ruth Lake can also be reached via a spur from the Lofty Lake Loop trail.
