Park at the Lake Buteo parking lot where there are vault toilets. You can either start to the right and cross the dam or to the left where the trail is marked. There is one wooden bridge, and the trail goes from a lowland swampy area (off-trail) and higher bank. The trail runs along one of the park paved roads accessed from Hwy DD. On the west side of the lake, the trail meets up with Hawk Nest Trail at three spots. Otherwise, you can hike the loop all the way over the dam next to the spillway.
