Overview

This well-maintained route follows along the Clarks Hill/Strom Thurmond Reservoir shoreline.

Description

Navigate to the Petersburg Trailhead/Campground. The East Bartram Trail takes off in two directions from here, west across the paved road from the parking area and north around the pavilion—take the north route. The trail is popular and very easy to follow, with yellow blazes and trail-side markers to help keep you on track. Since it follows the shore, water is always nearby if you want to cool your feet or let your critter get a drink.

At mile 4-ish, you'll come to a parking area with signs marking the continuation of Bartram and directions to the Lake Springs Loop, which has the majority of the climbs you'll see on this route. This map hikes the loop clockwise, but it doesn't matter which way you go. You'll come back to this parking area (one latrine available, no water) and then it is four easy miles back to Petersburg, where there is a latrine, changing area, and hoses set up by the mountain bikers. The water is potable.

The trail is very popular with hikers and mountain bikers, so keep alert.

One of the sunnier spots on the trail. Vegetation keeps much of this trail tight.

Nice cool day, great trail for an early start. Watch out for webs across the path or make sure someone is in front to knock them down for you. 11mi — 4h 00m
