Description
Elden Lookout Road provides a direct route to the summit of Mount Elden, with possible connections to many area trails along the way (e.g.,
Rocky Ridge, Upper & Lower Oldham, Brookbank,
Sunset, etc). The climb is relentless and demands a decent level of fitness, but the road offers few obstacles and is entirely non-technical (unless you happen to be on the heels of a big monsoon storm). Conditions vary considerably depending on how recently a road grader has been through. There are lots of scenic forests and sights along the way, culminating in magnificent views from the top of Mount Elden.
Elden Lookout Road is closed to non-service vehicles late into the spring, but is typically passable well before the road opens to cars. At any time of year, be ready for oncoming vehicle traffic on the narrow and curvy road—engine noise can be very hard to hear around some curves.
