From the south, the Mule Deer Trail begins near the terminus of the South Trail and ends to the north on a dirt road next to the main trailhead. The terrain is mostly intermediate with some short climbs and a descent before reaching the trailhead.

From the parking area, hikers can continue on the Ford Canyon Trail or take a right onto the Wildlife Trail which leads to a wildlife pond next to a windmill.
