An easy trail for those stopping off the ferry and returning the same day, or anyone with an hour to spare. Kids will learn plenty about Isle Royale, and adults will, too.
Description
Begin by the store uphill from the Visitor Center and hike along the hills around Windigo. See several examples of how man, moose, and natural forces have shaped Isle Royale.
At the last marker, one can continue down to the waterfront where the trail ends at the junction of the
Feldtmann Lake Trail and the
Washington Creek Trail, the latter which returns to the Windigo dock.
Or turn right towards the store, and encounter the Moose Exclosure, where balsam fir trees are allowed to grow unaffected by moose grazing that otherwise stunts these trees across the island.
Flora & Fauna
Canada dogwood, thimbleberry, aspen and balsam fir trees are abundant. Moose tracks have been seen on the trail. Stop by the Windigo Visitor Center for a flyer describing the 11 markers along the Windigo Nature Trail.
