Description

This blue-blazed trail in South Mahlon Dickerson is an interesting cut through, intersecting the Yellow Trail and Highlands Trail (Teal). Intended to give the mountain biker a smile, this trail has many switchbacks that ensure a route that crosses the most exposed bedrock possible. Some hikers may find the switchbacks a bit irritating as they are unnecessary, but enjoy it for what it is.

There is an enjoyable rock formation at mile mark 0.22, where the route eventually takes you to the top.

This trail is best when combined with other routes.

Flora & Fauna

On the day this route was recorded, I saw a young deer and a turkey. Vegetation-wise, this is your typical north Jersey hardwood forest, but there is also many areas of woodland grasses. Be extra careful of ticks here; in the 1.4 mile journey I pulled off six.

Even though you parked at "Saffin Pond", the yellow trail bears right (ignore the signpost to "Saffin Pond"). It will get you to the pond, but not where you parked.

The Blue Trail is full of winding switchbacks. From this spot, enjoy the view of this 35 foot ledge you'll eventually traverse.
