The Cave Bay Track is another option to return from the summit of Mt Pauanui to the car park. The trail starts at a junction with the Mt. Pauanui Trig Track and starts a sustained downhill. There are some steeper rocky and root sections, but the more difficult part is the boulder beach at Cave Bay.
