Free wilderness permits and campfire permits are required to enter the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
Description
This trail is a longer, less-frequently used alternative to the
Long Canyon Trail for getting to the
Four Lakes Trail. It also provides an alternative route to the summit of Granite Peak.
From the trailhead, hike north for about a mile through logged forest until you reach the boundary of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, where the forest returns. From there, hike for 3 miles along numerous switchbacks to Red Mountain Meadows.
At 3.8 miles, pass the Granite Peak Spur, which leads to the summit of Granite Peak.
Continue to climb through meadows to reach Stonewall Pass at 4.5 miles. Enjoy the views of Granite, Siligo, and Gibson peaks.
From the pass, descend toward Von Matre Meadows, then climb again to Little Stonewall Pass.
From Little Stonewall Pass, descend again into Siligo Meadows before climbing one last time to Deer Creek Pass and the junction with the
Long Canyon Trail.
