Description
This is an easy trail. What climbs there are, are relatively short and gradual. Some nice scenery that is, for all intent and purpose, in the city, but you'll also see remnants of the now extinct Black Mountain Volcano.
The trail is well marked at the beginning and the end—less so in between. For example, the second half of the loop (going counter-clockwise) is in a dry wash, and the only marker to pick up on that is a small plastic post in a wash below the trail you are on. There is lots of mountain bike singletrack cutting through the main trail, that combined with lack of signage means you could easily get off the trail—best to just check the maps or
Hiking Project mobile app from time to time.
On the east side of the loop are some mountain bike trails that parallel the dry wash: take those to avoid the tiresome loose footing of the sandy wash. It will add some extra minor climbs, but will make for a nice break from the sand.
