Overview

A loop that leads hikers around a tidal lagoon where numerous species of birds and an abundance of other wildlife can be found. The area includes a blue heron rookery.

Need to Know

There is no cost to park at Henricus Park located at 341 Henricus Park Road (Conservation Area).

Description

The Dutch Gap Conservation Area surrounds Henricus Historical Park where you'll find woodlands, wetlands, and the old James River channel created when Sir Thomas Dale attempted in 1611 to shorten the river distance by channeling a bypass. During the winter you can observe the "graveyard" of submerged barges and several islands. Dutch Gap also provides a boat landing on the James River.

Flora & Fauna

Numerous species of birds and an abundance of other wildlife can be found.

History & Background

This trail is adjacent to the city of Henricus, the second successful English settlement in the New World.
