Description
A beautiful trail leading through native bush, the Round Track follows close to the boundary of the Reserve, but just far enough in that you don't realize that you are so close to the road and farmland.
The track takes about 1hour 30min - 2 hours. The first third of the track is quite flat, then it slowly descends to the Pekanui Stream, where you cross a bridge before climbing slowly back up to the start. Hikers will pass through beautiful native bush, with lots of fern undergrowth surrounds you for the entire loop.
Flora & Fauna
Visitors will see many native birds in the reserve including the pied tit, silvereye, North Island fantail, tui and kereru. There are also many native plants like king ferns, miro, and the occasional hinau can all be seen in this tawa-kamahi forest. Keep a special eye out near the Pekanui Stream, where a 600-year-old kihakatea can be seen!
