While attempting to hike the whole length may prove too much, children can certainly enjoy a smaller portion of this trail.
Description
This popular urban trail is one of the three original sections of the Illinois Prairie Path. It begins off of South 1st Avenue in Maywood. From there, it travels west past a mix of residential and industrial areas.
Around two-and-a-half miles in, the trail crosses onto Warren Avenue. Follow the road and then take a right onto North Forest Avenue, where the trail starts up again next to a water tower. A long grassy stretch eventually crosses under the highway to transition into a short section pleasantly lined by trees.
A few miles ahead, the section through Lombard travels through several neighborhoods which will involve many street crossings at well-marked intersections. On the other side of Highway 355, the crushed path borders a golf course before heading into the heart of Glen Ellyn.
From there, a few more miles brings hikers to the end in Wheaton, where the trail meets the other two main branches:
Illinois Prairie Path - Elgin Branch and
Illinois Prairie Path - Aurora Branch.
