The lower part of the Green Canyon Way Trail is open most of the year. Higher parts of the trail towards Hunchback Mountain, are snowed in till late May. Trail is not regularly maintained and may have blowdown and washouts.

Description

Green Canyon Way Trail begins along Salmon River Road across the road from Green Canyon Campground and is a long steady climb with numerous switchbacks to the ridge line of Hunchback Mountain. While the forest vegetation is thick and luscious, the views for this steep slog are few and far between. It is a great shady hike on a hot, summer day. Wildflowers are a scenic substitute for vistas. Rhododendrons, bear grass, and other meadow wildflowers are beautiful in early summer. Many of the trees are pistol butted because of the steep unstable soils on the slopes.

This trail gets little use and is not routinely maintained. There has been significant blow down which has not all been logged out. Some climbing over logs will be necessary. In addition, blow down near the top of the trail has taken out part of the trail tread requiring a traverse. The trail may get logged out and repaired, but this area is susceptible to slides and blow down, so be prepared to climb over some logs and traverse a couple of washouts.

Flora & Fauna

Low elevation Douglas fir, western hemlock, western red cedar provide cover to a riot of ferns including sword fern, deer fern, and maidenhair fern. Trilliums bloom in the spring among, Oregon grape, and salal. As you climb into rocky clearings, there are more hardwoods including vine maple and oak which have good fall color. Rocky meadow openings are a riot of various wildflowers.
