Description
While this trail is not the shortest way to the top of Spencer Butte, the Spencer Butte Main Trail balances a direct approach with a more practical climb than what you'd find on the
West Spencer Butte Summit Trail. In fact, the upper half of this trail is the most common route to the summit from each of the nearby trailheads.
From the Spencer Butte Trailhead, the trail climbs gently into a peaceful forest of Douglas firs with the occasional clearing. A little over a half mile in, the trail intersects with the
Ridgeline Trail: Junction to Spencer Butte Main Trail. From this point, the trail veers left and begins climbing the southern flank of Spencer Butte.
After a series of switchbacks, the trail exits from under the tree cover into an area that used to involve a rocky scramble. However, recent improvements have transformed this once-challenging section into impressive sets of stairs that make for much easier going.
Once you've reached the rocky summit, you'll easily understand why this local favorite is so popular. Sit back and enjoy the great views of Eugene and the Willamette Valley that surround you on all sides.
