Generally open April through May as snow conditions allow. Portions of this trail travel through wetlands. It's important to remain on the raised gravel path to protect these delicate areas.

Description

The Commemorative Emigrant Trail can be accessed from a number of points along the way. Starting at the southern trailhead, the trail heads downhill along a dirt road. As it follows the contours of the creek, the trail makes a number of creek and road crossings until it heads across Alder Creek Road. For the next half mile a gradual climb leads through a forest of pines to a gate just before Highway 89.

On the other side of the highway sits the Donner Camp Picnic Area, complete with facilities. To continue, head through the parking area at the camp and pick up the trail on the north side of the pavement. A slight climb over the ridge separating the camp from Prosser Creek Reservoir brings Mount Rose and the water below into view. This section is also good for wildlife viewing.

Not too far ahead, the trail briefly skirts Prosser Creek before doubling back to access the highway bridge to facilitate a crossing. When the water is very low, the creek can be forded, but most will opt for the bridge. From here, the trail continues to wander through forests and open meadows as it makes its way toward Stampede Reservoir. Before reaching the reservoir, the trail intersects a small parking area to the west just before the boat launch access road.
