Even when combined with the short stretch of the Chapel Lake Trail, this route is short enough for kids to enjoy with the added benefit of visiting a waterfall.
Description
From the trailhead, follow signs for Mosquito Beach. You'll briefly head out on the
Chapel Lake Trail. The trail will switchback down a gentle slope, and will then climb the same drainage on the other side. During the climb, the
Chapel Lake Trail will be on the right, but look for the
Mosquito Falls Trail to the left. Note that you'll also have to detour off of the Mosquito Beach Trail shortly. The trail will still arrive at Mosquito Beach, and you'll still have the opportunity to meet all of the biting flies and mosquitos that are there, but you'll add a little distance and a more significant descent to the falls and then climb back up towards Mosquito Campground and the beach.
The trail is well maintained, although it could use some more trail signage and blazing. The trail is primarily singletrack with a few improved creek crossings and switchbacks.
This trail is part of the Chapel Basin loop. This alternate path adds about 1 mile to the overall loop but takes in the additional scenery of
Mosquito Falls.
