Need to Know
This is a popular destination and can be very busy in the warmer months, especially with the lift access.
Description
To access this route, head to the parking area at the Kampenwand Talstation. Head east along the Fuchslug road, looking for the lefthand turn onto
Trail 20 which overlaps a short section of Schlechtenberg Road. Continue to wind your way east on
Trail 20 as it dives into the dense forest. At just under 0.9 miles, look for the left turn onto the
Reitweg.
When in doubt, follow signs for the Kampenwand and
Trail 200 or use the
Hiking Project mobile app to keep track of your location.
Head north on the
Reitweg until it ends at
Trail 200, just under two miles from the start. Turn right onto the wide, climbing
Trail 200, and be aware of mountain bikers who are making their speedy descent on this fire road. Push on up this road until it emerges from the forest.
Up ahead, you'll see the Schlechtenbergalm. This is a great place to take a quick snack, though you only have a short, albeit steep, uphill section left. Continue for another 0.7 miles to the Kampenwand Bergstation, where paragliders use the wide meadow to take off into the air. The SonnenAlm is a great spot for a meal and cold beverage, or you can opt to continue east to the base of the Kampenwand peaks on the
Kampenwand Access Road.
From the Steinlingalm, head up the steep and technical scramble on the
Kampenwandsteig Spur. Be aware as this trail becomes very steep and narrow in addition to being a bottleneck for folks trying to get up and down. The trail is also loose with rocks so be aware of your footing and try to tread lightly and call out if any rock is dislodged.
At the summit, enjoy the 360-degree views before making your way back down.
You can either return the way you came or use the
Reitweg Alternate which has another beautiful overlook before connecting back with
Trail 200.
