Description

From the top of Donnelly Flat Loop, the Atiwhakatu Track gradually ascends the valley alongside the Atiwhakatu River (on it's true right). The trail is benched and graveled and easy to follow. The track offers a flatter alternate to the surrounding mountainous trails.

The track crosses many, many small tributaries and streams, using a mix of wood and steel bridges as well as occasional wire rope bridges.

The Atiwhakatu Hut greets you about 7 km after departing the Holdsworth carpark. At the hut, you can continue up the valley or climb steeply towards Mount Jumbo.
