The first couple miles of the trail traverse through deep forest briefly opening up at the large lush meadow called Fir Glade. After the glade, the view eventually opens up to a striking view across the top of the drainage of the Middle Fork of the Applegate River. The trail is a low grade climb from there until the pass around the back of Buck Peak Great where there are great views of the Siskiyou Mountains including Preston Peak in the distance.
Rounding Buck Peak, the trail is a moderate tending toward steep climb up to the pass between Buck and Figurehead. Once over the second pass descend switchbacks down rocky trail to the basin holding Azalea Lake and assorted meadows. There are many good campsites and many day hike opportunities at the lake.
