Nancy Pond Trail

This trail starts from the parking area on 302 and follows an old road grade. Shortly after passing the FPA sign, you'll see the Notchland trail system (on the right). The trail climbs up to an area that was lost to history. There isn't much reference for the abandoned machinery and furnace that are here.

A little beyond this, the trail turns right to follow a re-location. *This re-location pulls the trail away from the eroding banks of the brook up the hill; this was probably due to Hurricane Irene (2011). It descends and meets back with the original trail tread, then arrives at the falls. These falls are a great spot to take a break. The trail switchbacks along the south edge of the falls, then climbs up to Nancy Pond and Norcross Pond.

After the ponds, the trail becomes fairly standard and ends at Carrigain Notch Trail. *Most of this area owes its name to Nancy Barton, who died out here in the winter of 1788. Nancy was buried by the brook where they found her; there are those that say her cries can still be heard within the forest. Perhaps, one day, she will be re-united with the remains of Jim Swindell and finally be at peace.
