Zealand Road, on which the Hale
Brook Trail is located, closes seasonally, generally in November or December and reopens in April or May.
Description
The trailhead is located at a parking lot on the west side of Zealand Road. There is a sign indicating the start of this yellow-blazed trail. Initially it climbs at an easy grade, crossing over a backcountry ski trail. As the grade turns moderate you can hear the Hale Brook to the right off the trail. After approximately 1 mile, the trail crosses this brook. After another 0.5 miles, the trail crosses the water again before climbing up a series of switchbacks to accommodate for the increasing grade. The trail narrows until reaching the summit of Mount Hale, defined by a small clearing with a 5-foot cairn and remnants of an old fire watch tower.
While there aren't expansive summit views, the top of Mount Hale is one of the easier 4,000 ft peaks in the Whites, and you'll still leave with a great feeling of accomplishment. The brook and surrounding forest are serene a beautiful, and this shorter route isn't to be overlooked!
Flora & Fauna
You will find magnetic, volcanic rock at the summit, wild blueberries, and white birches!
