Description

The first part of this trail climbs gradually following Crawford Brook until it reaches a junction with A-Z trail. There it takes a left up to the summit of Mt. Avalon. At this point the trail is mostly boulders that you have to clamber over to get to Mt. Avalon where a short spur can take you to some nice views of Crawford Notch. This is a good hike to do if you are looking for something a little more challenging than Mt. Willard and with a little less traffic.

From there the Avalon trail then crosses a short ridge before reentering the forest and following some gentle switchbacks where it meets the Willey Range Trail. This part of the Avalon trail can be quite muddy at times as there is a lot of water that runs off the side of Mt. Field into Crawford Notch over this trail.

Mt. Field can easily be summited after reaching the end of Avalon Trail by following the Willey Range trail to the left, views are limited here, but provide a different prospective of Crawford Notch.
