Description
The Point Ann Trail is a good traverse of the backside of Pike's Peak SP. Starting from the McGregor trailhead, the route contours a few small drainages as it makes its way through open forest. About 2/3rds of the way up the climb, the Hickory Hollow Loop branches off to the left. Continue straight to get to Point Ann. The view at the Point is nice, but sullied a bit by some powerlines. It has a major solitude bonus over the other overlooks in the park though. The real neatness comes from a series of unmarked prehistoric mounds leading away from Point Ann. Enjoy but please respect!
Doubling back from Point Ann, the route continues climbing at a very low grade as you follow the ridgetop south. You'll be hiking through beautiful, gigantic hardwood forest, which opens up to brush/prairie in a few spots just before arriving at the Homestead parking lot.
Flora & Fauna
Lots of wild raspberries in the summer. Good mushroom hunting in the spring and fall, if you know what you're looking for... The wide open forest makes for good birding.
