Description

The Tunnel Trail is a go-to choice for a relaxing hike during the summer months at the New River Gorge National River. This trail's dense forest and damp understory will keep you cool even on the hottest of days, while providing you with a peaceful experience unlike any other in the area. Follow the trail through hardwood forest, passing by large sandstone boulders dripping with moss and moisture. Be sure to watch your step on the multiple stair sections of the trail, as this area's abundant moisture can make them slippery. Toward the end of the Tunnel Trail, enjoy the spectacular rock overhang that lends the trail its name.

*Special Advisory: The tunnel along this trail is currently closed due to safety issues. The remaining segments of trail are open, however, no direct passage through the tunnel is allowed at this time. Contact the New River Gorge National River website for trail updates.
