Overview

This large perimeter loop encompasses both of the trails located in the Coral Woods Preserve. The route is a great way to see all that the park has to offer.

Description

Coral Woods consists of basically two loops through the largest stand of Maples in McHenry County. The one to the east, the Hiking/Ski Trail is mainly open prairie with a wide mowed grass path, while the western section, the Nature Trail, is a singletrack trail through a mixed tree forest. The wooded section has bridges crossing streams, but in a couple of places, visitors will need to ford very small and shallow streams (12-14" wide) by stepping over or utilizing rocks in the stream bed. These are not difficult, but should not be attempted without stable footwear. These areas are usually dry in the warmer summer months, but can be muddy in the spring.

The trail here represents the outer boundaries of all the available trails. Connecting trails throughout shorten the journey and allow hikers to utilize either the northern or southern portions.

A large parking lot, restrooms, and picnic areas are available. Benches are scattered along the trails as well.

Half wooded but no shade for half of it. Mix of gravel and sandy ground to mowed grass paths. The nature trail is the best part. 2mi — 0h 44m
