Overview
A steep and challenging route from the Matanuska River Valley floor to one of the highest peaks in the area. Spectacular panoramic views can be had from the summit.
Description
This trail begins on an access road and continues about 1.4 miles to a small hydroelectric dam on McRoberts Creek. At this point, a singletrack trail begins to wind through vegetation and parallels McRoberts Creek for a while until reaching treeline around 2,500 ft. From here, climb through alpine tundra until reaching a large talus field that leads to the summit of Matanuska Peak.
The end of this trail is extremely steep, and the talus slope presents a somewhat formidable obstacle. Use caution, and keep an eye out for cairns that mark the way.
