Overview

One of the toughest and most rewarding trails in the North Cascades, Lookout Mountain is a great alternative to popular nearby hikes like Hidden Lake Lookout and Cascade Pass. This trail starts low and ends a mile high, its 4,400-foot elevation gain discouraging most hikers. If you're seeking unparalleled views paired with solitude, look no further than Lookout.

Need to Know

Undeveloped trailhead (no restrooms). No parking pass required.

Description

The trail begins in the forest and climbs, climbs, climbs. Expect mostly switchbacks for the first 1.7 miles. Pop out of the woods for a short stretch before re-entering old-growth forest. The grade finally eases somewhat at 2 miles, crossing a creek via footbridge before reaching a junction at 2.6 miles. Head left here for the lookout. The trail to the right continues to Monogram Lake - a good alternative destination.

Continue climbing and you'll eventually emerge from tree cover at 3.3 miles. The lookout comes into view here, 1 trail mile ahead. You'll gain 1,000 feet in this final mile before reaching the summit. From the fire lookout, enjoy expansive views of the North Cascades in every direction. Originally the site of a 1920s fire lookout, the current structure was built in 1962 and remains open to the public.

Lots of snow at higher elevation. Very steep/exposed section 600 feet from the top. Recommend helmet, crampons, and ice axe. 7.2mi — 4h 45m
