Family Friendly
An easy loop around a beautiful little lake. Spot urban wildlife (birds, squirrels, frogs) and enjoy kid-specific educational programs in the nearby Children's Forest area.
Open daily from dawn to dusk.
Description
The loop around Lake Katherine is popular with all kinds of people who want a peaceful hike in a wooded setting not too far from their suburban homes.
Drive in and park in the parking lot or bike in from the Cal-Sag Trail. Most people start and end the loop on the east side near the parking lot and nature center. The path is tree-lined, gravel, and fairly flat all around. You'll enjoy views of the Cal-Sag channel to the north and Lake Katherine all around. There are occasional benches for resting and quiet reflection.
Additional activities in the Lake Katherine Nature Center area include: canoeing, walks through the Children's Forest or gardens, and photobombing wedding photos. Visit
lakekatherine.org/ for more information about the park.
Flora & Fauna
You'll find mostly urban wildlife on this nature walk. Lots of songbirds, squirrels, and ducks. When the trail gets closer to the water's edge you can spot frogs and toads as well. Butterflies LOVE the flower gardens closer to the Nature Center parking lot.
