Description
This is a relatively short and wide gravel/dirt trail that is the main access trail to connect to several more interesting singletrack trails in the Carolina North Forest. Its main utility is (1) as an access trail, and (2) it is usable sooner after heavy rains than the singletrack trails, which take longer to dry out.
The trail starts at the Locust Parking Lot in Carolina North Forest. Proceeding in a clockwise direction from the trail access gate, the trail climbs very gradually for the first half mile. Just before 1 mile, you'll cross the PSNC Corridor utility easement, where there is a trail kiosk with a trail map.
Continuing on the Pumpkin Loop, after about 1.25 miles, you'll cross a paved section of the
Carolina North Greenway with formal street signs - weird! After another .25 miles, the Pumpkin Loop again crosses the
Carolina North Greenway and continues in the woods.
At about 2 miles, the trail briefly joins the
Carolina North Greenway before the Greenway ends and the trail continues on for a brief segment that is closer to singletrack than the wide gravel/dirt road that is has been previously. At about 2.25 miles, the trail passes through a gate and then joins the gravel road that provides access to the Locust Parking Lot. The last 0.25 miles of the trail follows this road to the parking lot.
