Description
Chipmunk Trail is .6 miles in length. The trail connects the two shelters in the park, and parking is available at each leg of the trail.
You quickly get immersed into the woodland setting at the park. The trail traverses a mature woodland of oaks, hickories, elm, hackberry and other tree species as well. The understory is made of native dogwood and redbuds with spicebush occurring along the lower drainages.
The biggest drawback to the woodlands is the occurrence of honeysuckle. This exotic shrub has taken over the wooded area. The dense foliage of honeysuckle prevents sunlight from reaching the woodland floor throughout the growing season. This eliminates wildflowers, sedges, grasses and almost all native flora. The trail does go by some rather large trees.
