Overview

The Greenwood/Scenic River Trail Classic is exactly that: a classic route in the heart of Wayne National Forest. Theres something for everyone here: steep climbs and descents, trekking past creeks and huge sandstone boulders and through valleys of old and new growth forests, and no shortage of Appalachian hills.

The hike is made up of two linear trails, the Greenwood Trail and the Scenic River Trail, and the route can be taken in either direction for an ideal experience. After the first climb on the trail, the Ohio River is visible on the left and is best viewed during the winter months when fewer leaves are on the trees.

Need to Know

At the lowest point on the Greenwood Trail, you'll cross a gravel driveway near the creek crossing. If you drop down the driveway, you can bail out to Archer's Fork Rd (CR 14). A left on CR 14 will pop you back out to SR 7. NOTE: The gravel driveway is a right-of-way through private property so please be courteous and respectful.

If you're looking for something to eat after your day, Newport has a couple of options. B & J's, The Jug, or Station Pizza (St. Mary's WV across the bridge) are all good choices.

Description

From the Scenic River Trail trailhead, proceed for several minutes until you reach signs designating the continuation of the Scenic River and the Greenwood Trail. Either choice will take you on the loop.

Both trails are similar in terms of terrain and elevation, although the Greenwood Trail portion is more than twice as long. A segment of the extensive North Country Trail is accessible off the Greenwood Trail, designated by blue diamond tree markers.

Also, there is an optional out and back section on the Scenic River Trail (2 miles total) when you reach the end of Greenwood Trail. Otherwise, keep right at the fork to continue the loop to its completion.
