Description

Be sure to pick up a Nature Guide at the Elk Mountain Trailhead for the full natural history experience while on trail.

Starting at the Elk Mountain Nature Trail Parking Area, head counter-clockwise on the trail across rolling prairie lands, dense forests, and peaceful mountain drainages. Along the way, be sure to take time to stop at each interpretive site in order to fully experience the diverse natural world living within Wind Cave National Park.

You'll know you've reached the trail's end when it crosses in front of the campground amphitheater. At this point, head north along the amphitheater path until you reach the road. Turn right and hike a short distance before the parking area will become visible on your left.

Flora & Fauna

Check out the Elk Mountain Nature Guide for an in-depth look at the local flora and fauna. The guide is available in print at the trailhead.
