Description

This trail, starting about 50 yards from the US/Canada border, is the gateway to the Belly River area. It starts out in a pleasant lodgepole forest with no views. As you work your way down to the valley floor, the trail transitions to areas of aspen groves and sparsely forested meadows giving you previews of the area.

Once down on the valley floor, meadows become more common and include impressive views of the surrounding rocky peaks. The trail alternates between various combinations of large meadows, the Belly River, and pine and aspen forests with little streams trickling down from Lee Ridge.

As you approach the Belly River Ranger Station, the trail is predominately amazing meadows with mountains jutting up from wooded foothills.

Flora & Fauna

Loads of meadow wildflowers such as lupine, indian paintbrush, asters, etc. Birding is great, ranging from meadow birds like Sandhill Cranes and Vesper Sparrows to chickadees and thrushes in the forests. Deer, elk, moose, and bear can be found anywhere along the way.
