Description
To access the trail,
Norumbega Mountain Trail parking lot around State Route 3. Cross the road and hike up the
Hadlock Brook Trail for roughly 0.35 miles. The trail breaks off to the right and descends toward the pond. The trail crosses the carriage road and the Hadlock Brook Bridge, one of the Rockefeller Carriage Road Bridges, that was build in 1926. The trail follows the brook for a short distance before crossing over and following the shore of the pond. About halfway along Hadlock Pond, the trail becomes a raceway, logs raised above the forest floor that help preserve the forest and provide for easy hiking. This makes the hiking easy all the way to the road. Along the way, nice views of the lake, especially at sunset, can be enjoyed. The trail emerges at State Route 3, and crosses the road here so be mindful of cars as they are moving quickly.
After crossing the road, the trail follows the road on a raceway before entering the woods. The trail becomes rougher as it makes its way to Lower Hadlock Pond. At roughly a mile, the trail for Norumbega Mountain breaks off to the right and then shortly after the
Lower Hadlock Trail breaks off to the left. The trail continues to hug the shoreline until it arrives at the far end of the pond, where a service road meets the trail. From here, you can hike out the road to to meet up with the
Lower Hadlock Trail and start to make your way back to your car, or to the road if you have a shuttle arranged.
