Description
Rising 1,194 feet above the southern shores of Mount Desert Island, Penobscot Mountain offers some of the finest views in Acadia. The trail starts at the southern base of Penobscot Mountain. Head northeast from the trailhead, and you'll cross over three Carriage Roads before heading up the southern ridge of Penobscot Mountain. Just past the intersection with the
Spring Trail, spectacular views unfold to the south. Particularly striking are the views of the Cranberry Isles.
Follow the rocky ridge to the summit, which offers sweeping 360-degree views, including beautiful views of Jordan Pond to the east. From the summit, follow the trail down to Sargent Mountain Pond, where those not afraid of mud and muck can take a refreshing swim.
