“A short trail to Hospital Rock, where U.S. army soldiers camped during the Modoc Indian War.
”
This short trail is located on the north side of the road that runs along the northern border of the park. It is located near the northern terminus of Lyons Trail; A small parking area is easily visible where the trail begins. The trail is easy to follow and leads to the top of a small rocky formation called Hospital Rock.
Hospital Rock was the location of a camp and crude field hospital that was used by a small contingent of U.S. Army soldiers during the Modoc Indian War. The soldiers used this location and nearby Gillem Bluff to launch attacks on Modoc warriors holed up in Captian Jack's Stronghold. Lieutenant William Sherwood died at Hospital Rock after being mortally wounded during an attack. His possessions can be seen in the small museum at the park visitor center.
