Description
The beginning of the trail is at the end of
Wolf Tree Trail at the intersection with
Homestead Trail.
A climbing access trail for Student Wall splits off to the right in about a third of a mile. This trail is singletrack for a while until you reach an irrigation canal. The canal drops into an underground culvert.
Careful with your animals around this area. Several dogs have fallen into the canal and been sucked into the culvert, it is about a mile before they pop out.
After the canal, you join an old BLM road that is cut into the side of the hill. It is visible from the parking lot at Smith Rock State Park. At the switchback, there is a climbing access trail that will take you to Koala Rock and the rest of the Marsupial Rock formation. You'll climb about 900 feet in this section. As you ascend this section, you can look back over Smith Rock State Park and observe the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, and on good days, Mt. Hood. At the top, you can join the Gray Butte Trail or continue on the Smith Rock State Park
Summit Loop Trail on the
Summit Trail.
