Description
The Rocky Point Trail connects the
Big Stonecoal Trail and
Red Creek Trail while skirting beneath Lion's Head. The summit is impossible to see from the trail on account of the tree line. There is no access to water on this trail, so be sure to stock up when crossing the creek.
The paths to the summit and to Lion Head do not have trail markers. A few paths are marked with small cairns, but can be easily missed.
The trail is rocky the entire 2 miles. Not only is the trail full of ankle breakers, but the steep areas off trail are full of boulders. You can hammock overnight easily in the dense forest, but the boulders and the steep slopes will make a tent impossible. Many hikers set up a tent at campsites along the creek and hike up to the summit before returning at dusk. Those sites go quickly on the weekends, so plan to claim a spot early if you want one.
The southern point offers the only relief from the dense tree line along the trail, but does open up to some amazing views of the lower valley. Fall color changes are breathtaking from the southern point and from Lion Head.
