Description

Start at the Sugar Hill Visitor Center and walk north to the gate where the paved road ends. Enter through the pedestrian/bicycle gate and follow the stabilized sand road east for about 4.5 miles to East Point. The road winds through sand dunes and scrub brush. Be sure to bring water and a snack. Sunscreen is a must as there is no shade.

East Point is a popular spot for surf fishing. A special use permit can be obtained from the ranger station to drive a vehicle to the point if you want to fish but don't want to hoof it.

This makes a good loop (Big Big Bend Scenic Byway and Beach Loop) when combined with the East Point Beach hike on the way back.
