Description
From the mellow
Surprise Pass, you'll exit the
Coal Creek Trail and begin your journey into Nyack Creek. The imposing Mount Stimson dominates the southern massive of peaks that tower above you. Few visit this region but the trails are well-maintained by Glacier Trail Crews.
At the northernmost part of this trail, you'll find yourself just about as far into the remote backcountry as one can get in the park. Since the park is split in half east to west by the Going to Sun Road, the most remote sections of the park are halfway between the road and the boundary of the park such as is the case here along the Nyack Creek Trail.
The trail follows the valley bottom, so elevation gain and loss are pretty minimal, but the views are massive and won't tire the eye of even the most jaded hiker. Small bubbling waterfalls, massive peaks, and copious flora and fauna will keep you occupied for all these nearly 20 miles of hiking.
